Set in the cool highlands of Baturiti, surrounded by jungle, gardens, and traditional Indonesian houses, this is a 4-day creative reset for anyone ready to commit.

4-Day Program

Day 1: Arrive, exhale, set your intention

  • Arrival window, welcome drink, and sunset meet-up
  • Karen introduces her role as a writing coach: helping you turn ideas into structure and stay on track beyond the retreat.

Evening group session (with Karen):

  • Why you’re here
  • What you’re going to gain
  • What to expect by the end

Creative solo time: space to reflect, or begin drafting over dinner.

Day 2: Share your story, 1:1 session, focused writing

Morning group session:

  • Interactive story-sharing in any form: writing, sketching, storytelling, singing, painting, or simply speaking aloud
  • No feedback or critique, just expression

Afternoon:

  • Private 1:1 session with Karen (30 mins each, rolling)
  • Others continue freewriting, or starting a draft
  • Optional group dinner or sharing circle in the evening

Day 3: Shape your book’s purpose and structure

Morning Q&A and workshop:

  • What are your major blocks?
  • Do you want this book to be published or kept private?
  • What is your motivation, profit, legacy, or healing?

Afternoon session:

  • Audience mapping and message clarity
  • Self-publishing vs traditional routes
  • Open Q&A and practical insights
  • Sunset visit to temple, or yoga at the venue (Optional)

Day 4: Map your next steps and commitment plan

Morning:

  • Writing time: finish a personal plan or reviewing work
  • Quiet space to commit to your next steps

Midday group session:

  • Share what’s been achieved (optional)
  • Verbalise a commitment: what happens after this retreat?
  • Karen offers tailored guidance and optional post-retreat pathways
  • Sunset visit to temple, or yoga at the venue (Optional)

Day 5: Reflect & Depart

Morning:

Just an hour inland from Canggu, the road rises into the hills of Tabanan, where cooler air and shifting landscapes mark the beginning of something quieter. As the road climbs toward Batukaru the temperature drops. Forests, and mountain terrain create a clear sense of distance from tourist life.

The venue celebrates creativity in all forms, a fitting backdrop for your own expression. Desa Seni means “art village”, with a focus on Indonesian culture and artists who live and work across the archipelago.

The entrance leads guests down a stone pathway, past traditional Indonesian structures, each thoughtfully restored, culminating in a fire pit, and a yoga shala. Within a short time of arrival, you are surrounded by greenery, fresh air, and open space. The perfect place to begin writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you book our flights? Accommodation is included in the retreat cost, but air travel and transport to the hotel must be arranged by the attendee.

Can I stay at a different hotel? No, the package and accommodation are combined to ensure a more relaxed retreat.

Can I bring my children? As lovely as they are, this is an adults-only writing retreat designed for focused, creative work.

Do I need travel insurance? Every retreat attendee must show a certificate of travel insurance or agree to travel in writing without insurance.

What visa do I need to travel to Bali? A Visa on Arrival (VOA) is available online in advance or on arrival at Ngurah Rai Airport (Denpasar). It is valid for 30 days and can be extended once. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of travel.

Can I stay an extra night? Yes, extra nights at the hotel can be arranged on request.

These Terms and Conditions (“Terms”) govern your participation in the Retreat, your use of this website, and any services, content, or materials provided by Karen Donald Publishing/ PT Publishing KAR DON (“We”, “Us”, “Our”). By purchasing a ticket, attending the retreat, using this site, or accessing our services in any way, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you disagree, please do not proceed.

  1. Eligibility
    You must be 18 years or older and legally capable of entering into binding agreements. By registering for the Retreat, you confirm that all information provided by you is accurate and not on behalf of another person.

  2. Nature of Services
    Karen Donald and sundry deliver personal development retreats, teachings, workshops and related content designed to help individuals write their books. We are not responsible for publishing unless engaged.

  3. Personal Information & Privacy
    To register, we may collect personal information such as your name, contact details, and payment information.

  4. Intellectual Property
    All materials, teachings, written content, exercises, recordings, retreat content, branding are protected intellectual property. You agree not to copy, reproduce, distribute, teach, host, or integrate any part of ourcontent, exercises, materials, or retreat processes in your own work, programs, events, or retreats without express written consent from us.

  5. Behaviour & House Rules
    To maintain a safe, respectful environment, all participants must agree to:

    *refrain from disruptive behaviour, harassment, or aggression;
    *follow venue rules, including noise restrictions, smoking rules, pet rules, and safety guidelines;
    *respect the space, property, and other participants;
    *take full responsibility for personal belongings (we are not liable for loss, theft, or damage).

  6. Health, Safety & Responsibility
    You acknowledge:

    *You participate voluntarily and at your own risk.
    *You are responsible for your own physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing before, during, and after the retreat.
    *We are not liable for injuries, accidents, emotional distress, medical conditions, allergic reactions, or loss occurring on or off retreat premises.

    We are not responsible for any incidents occurring during off-site activities, free time, excursions, or personal travel arrangements.
    It is strongly recommended that you take out comprehensive travel insurance cover.

    *changes due to weather, illness, or unexpected events.

  7. Payments
    *Payment must be made as instructed on your invoice or booking page.
    *Accepted payment methods to Indonesia are via Midtrans and can be made using: Bank Transfer, Visa, Mastercard (fees may apply).

  8. All prices are listed in USD unless otherwise stated

  9. Participant Cancellations
    All cancellations must be made in writing via email. A cancellation is not considered active until you receive written confirmation from us.

    9.1 Cancellations made more than 6 weeks before the first day of the retreat:*100% refund, minus a USD50 administration fee.

    9.2 Cancellations made less than 6 weeks before the retreat:

    * All payments are non-refundable.
    *You may transfer your place to another person not already registered (up to 24 hours before Day 1), subject to a $50 administration fee.

    9.3 No refund will be issued for:
    *no-shows
    *arriving late
    *leaving early
    *missing retreat sessions
    *change of mind
    *personal emergency
    *illness or injury
    *dissatisfaction with any part of the experience

  10. Retreat Cancellation / Postponement by Us
    If the retreat is cancelled or postponed due to circumstances outside our control (e.g., venue issues, facilitator illness, natural disaster, government restrictions):

    *You will receive a full refund of retreat fees paid to us.
    *We are not responsible for travel, flights, or other personal expenses.
    *Insurance is strongly recommended to cover these.

    If extreme weather is declared by an official authority and we are required to cancel, full retreat fees will be refunded. No other compensation will be provided.

  11. Third-Party Services & Venue Liability
    We are not liable for the actions, errors, or omissions of:

    *accommodation providers
    *transport companies
    *spa services
    *tour operators
    *drivers
    *or any third-party vendor associated with your trip

    Any legal or refund claims must be directed toward the relevant provider.

  12. Travel Documents & Details (if applicable)
    Where travel or accommodation is included:

    *It is your responsibility to ensure all names, dates, and details are correct.
    *Travel documents must match your official ID.

  13. Insurance is recommended for all overseas retreats and is at the participant’s own costs.

  14. Travel documents are typically non-refundable and may incur fees for name or date changes.

  15. Force Majeure
    We are not liable for events beyond our reasonable control, including but not limited to:

    *extreme weather
    *natural disasters
    *pandemics
    *government restrictions

  16. Illness of facilitators
    *transport shutdowns
    *venue damage
    *political unrest

    Where these events occur, refunds are provided only as outlined in Section 10

  17. Limitation of Liability
    To the maximum extent permitted by Indonesian law:

    *We do not accept liability for personal injury, illness, property damage, loss, or expenses arising during or after the retreat.

    *Any liability that cannot be excluded is limited to the value of your retreat booking.

  18. Acknowledgment & Acceptance

    *you have read and understood these Terms;
    *you agree to be bound by them;
    *you participate voluntarily and at your own risk;
    *you take full responsibility for your own wellbeing;
    *you release PT Publishing KAR DON (trading as Karen Donald Publishing) and its facilitators from liability for all foreseeable and unforeseeable circumstances arising from the retreat or your participation.
